The explosions started at about 630 p.m., in the village of Elin Pelin, close to Sofia, the capital. Some explosions caused mushroom clouds to appear in the evening sky, while others had fireworks erupting in red and white hues, according to residents.
Locals also told the media that smaller explosions persisted during the night and into Friday morning.
Authorities say they have cordoned off the farmland and deployed military helicopters above the site.
