The Netherlands offered their best performance at Euro 2024 yet as Gakpo scored again to become one of the tournament’s top scorers.
The Netherlands are in the Euro 2024 last 8 after a convincing 3-0 victory over Romania.
Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 20th minute with a superb low finish in the near post, his third goal in the tournament, making him the top-scorer along with Slovenia’s Scharnz, Germany’s Musiala and Georgia’s Mikautadze.
Romania had dominated possession until then but never really tested Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, with their best chance coming when Dennis Man curled a shot over the crossbar.
The goal seemed to give the Dutch more confidence as they went on to dominate the second half and score two additional goals in rapid succession with Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen in the 83rd and 93rd minute.
The Dutch will now take on Austria or Turkey in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
That could see a quick rematch between the Netherlands and Austria in Berlin.
